Why Doesn’t Motivation Last & What You Should Do About It

Hey! In this new blog post, I am going discuss about one of the major topics in the category motivation.

Why motivation doesn’t last & what you should do about it?

To start with, nothing is really permanent in this world, not even motivation. Due to no so long lasting motivation, people find it challenging to stick to a habit or a task which they have committed for. The start for every habit or a commitment feels great but if you notice, the drive of motivation doesn’t last longer and fades after a while.

Is there anything you should do about it? Yes, you can fix this. Quoting the famous motivation guru, Zig Ziglar, “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.”

You see the catch there?

Understand that motivation is also like every emotion and a practice that needs to be done every day. It is an emotion that you can get by taking action.

Many feelings come and go and in the case of motivation, you cannot feel motivated all the time. It is quite normal to feel uninspired and want to get away or do nothing at all when you are demotivated.

Having said that, don’t get the concept of motivation like it is something wrong. In fact, it is a must have quality in every human that shouldn’t lack and improved from time to time. It is a very normal phenomenon that happens in our everyday lives.

Like I said earlier in the blog, there are ways to fix this. When you first start to set your goals, you start with either reading a book or watching a video that boosts your confidence. Actions like these act like a fuel to get motivated and take action.

The motivation will be at its peak in the beginning but it gets faded slowly and finally it disappears and you lose the steam to your commitments eventually.

Motivation: The Law of Diminishing Intent

The concept of the law of diminishing intent was first coined by Jim Rohn, which clarifies into, “The longer you wait to do something you should do now, the greater the odds that you will never actually do it.”

How true!

Jim Rohn broke it down. The longer you wait to take an action, the more is the possibility that you are going to procrastinate and not do it.

And hence, do not wait. Just. Do. It.

As the old proverb says, “Strive when it’s hot”.

There are limitless distractions around us. If you are waiting for the right moment, the chances are high that you will lose your focus and you already know that. Therefore you will lose your motivation to.

Why Motivation Doesn’t Last

From what I see, here are the few reasons why our motivation doesn’t last.

a) As I mentioned earlier in the blog, motivation is an emotion and such emotion comes and goes. Nothing is permanent.

b) We fall back into our comfort zone. We are motivated at the beginning and delay it after a couple of weeks and get back to our old behavior.

1. We get distracted easily.

There is a saying, “Where the focus goes, energy flows”. That means, when you get distracted from your daily routines, you tend to forget and ignore your goals and when this happens, you lose your focus and finally you lose your motivation to do what you have committed for.

2. Feeling doubtful

Self doubts sabotage your action. Especially doubts like “What if things don’t work out as planned?”, “What if something happens unexpectedly?”. Such thoughts pull down your motivation.

3. Fail to produce results

After you have put all of your time and effort into your commitment, it is very probably that you feel dejected if you are not seeing any result. Motivation gets to wane at this point of time.

Understand that success is a journey and not a destination or a short sprint where you can achieve it immediately. And This means you have to endure & hustle through all the time and it is then only you will taste the success that you have always wanted to.

Are you going to procrastinate things like always and not do anything about it, or are you going to build a system where no matter what pulls you down, you can still take action and do what is necessary and important for you?

If you keep on working on your plans, success is inevitable. If you keep on delaying your work, failure is inevitable too. Remember that there will be days when it rains all of a sudden and that thing shouldn’t be a reason to stop you from what you are doing.

So, when you lose your motivation, learn that you can do something to prevent yourself from falling into the trap of procrastination.
